Why e-readers last weeks, not hours
An E Ink display's battery advantage over an LCD or OLED tablet screen comes from a genuine, fundamental difference in how the two technologies work: E Ink only draws power when the page changes, physically rearranging charged pigment particles to form the new page, then holding that image with no ongoing power draw until the next page turn. An LCD or OLED screen, by contrast, has to continuously refresh and backlight or self-illuminate every pixel for as long as it's displaying anything at all.
That's the entire reason entry-level Kindles and Kobos are commonly rated for weeks of battery life (Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Scribe are both rated up to 12 weeks under typical use), while a similarly priced tablet running the same ebook app lasts roughly 10 hours on a charge. It's not a battery-capacity difference — it's a fundamentally different display technology.
The color E Ink trade-off nobody puts on the box clearly
Color E Ink panels (marketed as E Ink Kaleido 3, used across Kindle Colorsoft and Kobo's Clara Colour/Libra Colour lines) work by layering a color filter over the same underlying black-and-white E Ink technology — and that layering has a real resolution cost that's easy to miss in marketing copy:

Color content on these screens renders at half the pixel density of black-and-white text on the same physical panel. That's not a defect — it's how the color filter layer works — but it means a color e-reader's actual text-reading sharpness for standard novels is unaffected (still 300 PPI), while covers, colored highlights, and any color-illustrated content will look visibly softer than the crisp black-and-white text around them.
Color E Ink panels also typically display around 4,096 distinct colors — vivid enough for book covers and basic annotation color-coding, but nowhere near the color range of an LCD or OLED tablet screen. If color accuracy for detailed images matters more than paper-like reading comfort and battery life, a tablet remains the better tool for that specific job.
The real long-term decision: file format lock-in
The more consequential difference between the two major ecosystems isn't screen tech at all — it's which file formats and bookstores you're committing to:
- Kindle uses Amazon's own formats (KFX, MOBI) natively. EPUB files — the format used by most independent bookstores, public libraries, and non-Amazon purchases — have to be converted before they'll display properly, which can affect complex formatting in technical books, textbooks, or heavily illustrated titles.
- Kobo natively supports EPUB, meaning books bought from independent stores, sideloaded personal files, and many library-borrowed titles work without a conversion step.
- Library borrowing differs too: Kindle devices support multiple simultaneous library cards through the Libby app, while Kobo devices are generally limited to one active library card at a time — the opposite of the format-openness pattern, and worth checking against your own library habits specifically.
Waterproofing isn't universal, even within one brand's lineup
It's a common assumption that "e-readers are waterproof" as a category, but rated water resistance (commonly IPX8 certification) is a model-specific feature, not a category-wide standard. Kobo's Clara Colour and Libra Colour carry IPX8 certification; Amazon's entry-level, non-Paperwhite Kindle models have historically shipped without water resistance at all. Checking the specific model's IP rating — not assuming it from the brand or category — matters if poolside or bathtub reading is part of your actual use case.

"Weeks of battery" and "hours of screen-on time" are two different measurement conventions used across different manufacturer spec sheets — generally, weeks-based figures assume typical daily reading with the screen mostly idle between page turns, while hours-based figures measure continuous active screen time. Don't read a "14 hours" spec as worse than a "12 weeks" spec without checking which measurement convention each uses.
How to actually choose
- If you mostly read novels and nonfiction without much color content, the resolution trade-off of color E Ink won't matter — prioritize battery life and screen size instead.
- If most of your books come from one major retailer already, let that ecosystem decide the brand — converting an entire personal library after the fact is the more painful mistake to make.
